Day 2
Muscat highlights
Begin with a guided visit to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, including a short etiquette briefing. Pause at the Royal Opera House to admire Omani craftsmanship and enjoy coffee in the courtyard. Follow with the National Museum, where a curated route connects Oman’s seafaring, mountain life and frankincense trade. Make a short stop by the Al Alam Palace for photographs. As the heat eases, browse Mutrah Souq for incense, silver and textiles. If you would like time on the water, add a coastal or dolphin cruise from the marina.

Day 3
Nizwa and up to Jabal Akhdar
Drive inland through date-palm oases to Nizwa’s lively souq, tasting fresh halwa and browsing pottery and copper. Climb the fort for views across the old town before continuing to Jabrin Castle for painted ceilings and carved stucco. Pause for exterior views of Bahla’s vast walls, then stroll the mud-brick lanes and flowing falaj of Birkat Al Mouz. Ascend the switchbacks to the Saiq plateau for a mid-afternoon check-in and time on the terrace.

Day 4
Akhdar walk, then the dunes
Take an easy terrace or village walk past orchards, stone lanes and valley lookouts. Travel east via Ibra, stopping for a hosted Bedouin lunch and a short market look on weekdays. Change to 4×4 for the sand track to camp and rest for a while. In the late afternoon, ride a camel or walk to a quiet ridge for sunset colours. A private barbecue is served under clear stars.

Day 5
Desert, Sur and Wadi Shab, back to Muscat
Wake to still dunes and, if you like, try a little sandboarding before rolling out to Sur. See dhow carpenters at work and pause for coffee and fresh bread. Continue to Wadi Shab for a palm-lined walk and a refreshing swim to the waterfall cave when suitable. Those who prefer easier access can opt for Wadi Bani Khalid. Break for a late lunch, then return to Muscat. If the sea is calm, add a short coastal boat before evening.
